Abstract

This article examines the architectural features of low-rise housing in various countries, focusing on their functional and semiotic aspects. It analyzes low-rise residential building types in Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, and Morocco from the late 19th to the first half of the 20th centuries shaped by socioeconomic development and the needs of the population. The research is based on specific examples of architectural practice and includes a discussion of the role and significance of semiotics in shaping the image-spatial structure and symbolic content of low-rise housing. Special attention is paid to the cultural codes embodied in architectural forms, as well as to how the semiotic features of low-rise housing reflect the social status, lifestyle, and values of the society of its time. This analysis allows for a more profound interpretation of low-rise architecture as a significant element in the formation of the urban environment and its cultural identity.
