Abstract

The article presents the results of the first year of research conducted within the framework of the Russian Science Foundation grant “Military theme in the architectural and spatial development of the Far East”. The main part of the text is devoted to the organization of the Amur River Flotilla (ARF) base in the Osipovsky backwater near Khabarovsk (1908-1918). Using this particular case as an example, a number of issues related to the spatial and social hierarchy of military towns, the effectiveness of military construction commissions, the problems of finding high-quality building materials, and the adaptation of ‘bourgeois’ projects to the specifics of crew life are examined. It is suggested that I. S. Kitner had an influence on the formation of the brick garrison style.
