It is shown that, unlike most areas in the philosophy of knowledge, the sphere of network structures has no prototype in the ancient philosophical heritage. The article considers the evolution of ideas about the network aspect of the development of society in the works of twentieth-century methodologists, their achievements and shortcomings in connection with the theory and practice of architecture and urban planning.
