Abstract

The word “network” contains a vast variety of meanings and concepts. The current stage of development can generally be described as a network stage. Since the end of the 20th century, we have been living in a network society; networks are becoming the main element, carrier, and driving force behind any technology. Networks give us the opportunity to communicate at any time and in any place. No production is possible without logistics networks. Any communication today is incomplete without information networks. The Internet is increasingly taking over one sphere of our lives after another.

The pace of urbanization is not slowing down – more than half of humanity already lives in cities, and a city is, first of all, infrastructure networks. Engineering systems ensure the supply of energy resources, maintain comfort and the necessary level of safety. Communications are essential for maintaining the normal functioning of people in buildings. For commercial and industrial facilities, engineering networks ensure the normal operation of technological processes.

The third issue of the Project Baikal journal invites you to discuss the topic of networks in its numerous aspects: engineering networks and the life of cities and territories, energy facilities, logistics networks and industrial sites, information networks, marketplaces that have enveloped the entire planet, and their impact on cities and villages, etc. The main topic of the issue is more relevant than ever.
