Abstract

A pressing issue in the preservation of Lake Baikal is the treatment and disposal of wastewater from settlements, cities, and tourist centers located along the lake’s shores and in its central ecological zone. Due to strict legal requirements for the discharge of treated wastewater into Lake Baikal and the lack of available technologies for its purification according to regulatory standards, this problem has not been resolved for many years. The absence of a wastewater treatment system and the inability to purify wastewater according to regulatory standards hinder the development of residential areas, the construction of resort complexes, and other activities on Lake Baikal. The authors propose a comprehensive approach, which includes minimizing the flow of wastewater into the lake and reusing it for flushing toilets, growing agricultural products and forest plantations, and, if this is not possible, transferring it to other water basins. The logistical and technological aspects of this approach are considered.
