Unlike the category of space, the concept of place is not operational, because it has no mathematical support. At the same time, a place is a structural concept distinct from an element. The concept of place contains phenomenological and symbolic meanings (genius of place, relevance, gesture), which largely determine the nature of form making in modern architecture. The understanding of place as an anthropological unit of spatial experience refers to the concept of gesture introduced in the theory of architecture by A. Gabrichevsky. The gesture and the place are connected, but this connection is far from clear. The concept of place belongs to a specific fragment of the territory or structure of a building, limiting the possibility of filling this fragment with other structures. The gesture corresponds to the place. It is carried out inside the place but is oriented externally. References Bakhtin, M. M. (1975).
