The character of each place, its genius loci, forms its own local (from Latin ‘locus’, meaning ‘place’) system of values, its own concepts of beauty, which are related to the landscape, climate, history, traditions – all that, in fact, is called culture, including architectural culture. The search for a local identity is not an easy task. It is not always possible to identify and understand the elements of cultural heritage that are useful and necessary in the present and the future. Today, it is impossible to live the way our ancestors lived in ancient times. What projects on the search for local culture can be cited as a good example? What mistakes have already been made and now need discussing so as not to be repeated? What can and should local cultures share with each other in order to ensure the movement towards “flourishing diversity”, and what obstacles must be overcome on this path? The topic of local cultures, like the term itself, is philosophical, but it is also relevant to our profession, so we tried to touch and even illustrate the philosophical subject in this issue of the Project Baikal journal.
