Статья открывает цикл публикаций, написанных авторами по гранту Российского научного фонда «Военная тема в архитектурно-пространственном освоении Дальнего Востока». Дается обзор «казарменного дискурса» от академической «Истории казарменного помещения войск в России» Н. П. Ляпидевского (1881–1885) до современных публикаций как отечественных, так и зарубежных исследователей. Приводятся различные периодизации развития казарменного строительства.
